After years of experience in the industy we felt it was time for a change. We wanted to put stong techniques in the first place, a foundation to get creative from, with less focus on product sales but on the struggles stylist feel in their work and create a strong fundament you YOU the stylist to work more freely and have more confidence behind the chair.It is built around the craft, the process, and the belief that real growth comes from clarity, structure and shared creativity.

Refraction is led by Danny van Tuijl, an educator and creative director with more than 15 years of experience shaping salons, collections and creative teams across Europe. His work has always centred on structure, intention and honest critique — qualities that many stylists feel are missing in today’s education landscape.

Refraction reflects that philosophy. It isn’t about producing followers or repeating someone else’s style. It’s about giving hairstylists the clarity, direction and creative support they need to develop their own voice. Danny brings a combination of technical discipline, conceptual thinking and real-world industry experience — offering guidance that moves teams forward in a tangible, measurable way.

We believe in collaboration; bringing different skillsets, perspectives and experiences together. Not to follow, but to shape, question and refine.

Our approach is built on structure, direction and clarity. No trend recycling. No sales agenda. Just the fundamentals that actually move your work forward: form, movement, concept and execution.

I’m Danny van Tuijl — educator, art director, and hair obsessive.
Refraction was born out of a frustration with vague education and a love for real creative growth.

  • Over the past 15+ years, I’ve worked across more than five countries — from small salons to international stages.
    I’ve lived this craft from every angle: cutting behind the chair, creating collections, working backstage at fashion weeks, and mentoring salons across Europe.

    I opened my own salon early 2019, built award-nominated work with incredible teams, and found myself returning — again and again — to one thing:
    the power of education when it’s honest, structured, and creatively sharp.

    Everything I’ve learned — the mistakes, the wins, the pressure, the growth — feeds into how I now teach, coach, and create with others.

  • Too much hair education is vague, ego-driven, or selling something on the side.
    Refraction is the opposite: no product push, no fluff, no performance.

    It’s built for stylists and teams who want real creative development — with structure, direction, and clarity.
    Whether we’re working on a single seminar or building a full collection, it’s about shaping work that means something, not just looks good on Instagram.
